Enjoying Life One Glass at a Time

October 2014 Wine Club

Welcome back to you that have been ducking our summer heat in climes more temperate. For those that have not yet returned, you still have a chance to get ready--see the 'Upcoming Events' page of the site for the November wine club get-together.

Our October wine club meeting featured the finals of our World Famous El Primat Vino wine tasting as well as something a bit different. Because many of you couldn’t make the annual sojourn to wine country, we brought a taste of Amador County back to you!

The Tastings

El Primat Vino

The third and final heat of El Primat Vino was completed and 3 most excellent wines were tasted for the finale. We rated the wines on a 5 point scale. The winner was determined by a simple totaling of the ratings.

The scores are…
2009 Heitz Cellars Napa Cabernet………………….61 points
2008 Rutherford Ranch Reserve……………………56 points
2012 Caymus Napa Cabernet Anniversary.……….64 points

This all sounds very straight forward BUT, here are some interesting side notes.

  • Only one of the six people that had their wines represented in the finals voted for their choice!
  • More people rated the Rutherford Ranch wine a 5 (best) than any other wine. Unfortunately for that wine, more people also rated it a 1!
  • The winning wine was rated a 5 less than any of the others but also had the least number of 1 ratings.

AND THE WINNER IS….
Bob and Ruthie Wloczewski! Congratulations to both of you.

The Amador County Tastings

The travelers picked out 8 wines from Amador County for our group to sample. These are not the best wines we tasted or the highest priced, but represent a cross section of what’s available at a price that most of us would find reasonable.

The wines were….

Grape Variety_____Winery______Price
Torrontes………….Frog’s Tooth…..$18.28
Sangiovese……….Noceto………..$14.58
Barbera……………Dillian……..….$25.28
Tempranillo………..Ironstone……..$14.77
Primitivo ……….….Renwood.…….$24.29
Zinfandel…….…….Sobon.………..$18.15
Petite Syrah …..…..Borjon.……….$18.15
Petite Verdot………Runquist….…..$22.32

You were asked to vote on your favorite wine. The Renwood Primitivo (a Zinfandel clone) was rated best by 9 of you (out of 35) with the Runquist Petit Verdot winning 2nd place with 6 votes. All the wines got at least one vote (the Frog’s Tooth Torrontes, the only white wine).
